acrylic, LED light source, rechargeable battery &nbsp; I’ve always been interested in the torch as both a practical object and a symbol, something used to move through darkness and into the unknown. The Dolphin Torch is a particularly simple and familiar version, the kind of cheap, functional object that was once kept around the house for blackouts but has become increasingly obsolete. I’ve always admired products that have been reduced to their most direct form, and a modern aluminium ladder feels like there is almost nothing left to take away. As LED technology became smaller and cheaper, the oversized metal torch gradually fell out of fashion, but I’ve always remained attracted to it as an object. I once had a shelf made from Besser blocks in different colours, using architectural samples I had been given, and always liked the simple, accidental quality of it. Many of the works reference objects that carry a sense of familiarity or nostalgia for me, including torches, ladders, spirit levels and improvised furniture. Rather than designing entirely new forms, many pieces begin with existing objects or subtle references to twentieth century art and design, including the work of Donald Judd and Ettore Sottsass. I’m interested in slightly removing myself from the creative process and instead responding to forms that already exist in the world around me. While the original lamp celebrated raw industrial simplicity, Toyo embodies the futuristic aesthetics of modern automotive design. Like the original, it uses an off-the-shelf automotive headlamp (from a Toyota Corolla Aurus 2009–11); however, the addition of more complex components highlights the evolution of technology over six decades.
